May Day in Upper West: Regional Minister entreat workers to go into farming.

Nadowli was chosen as the venue for this year's edition of the May Day celebration for the Upper West. Correspondent Julius Dudimah reports that, as at 8.am, various unionized workers had already converged on the said venue before going on a procession through the principal streets of Nadowli.

Clad in their various union T-shirts, some workers managed to articulate their concerns to government through banners and placards with various inscriptions. 

The procession which was accompanied by a brass band was done by jubilant workers who had gathered as at that time and ended at around 8:30 am, where they were addressed by the various speakers for the day with the regional minister being the special guest of honour. 
The regional minister and also a former seasoned educationist in the very person of Hon. Suleman Alhassan gave the key note address.

 In his speech, the regional minister commended workers both formal and informal for their invaluable services to the attainment of organisational goals and national development.

He said it was imperative government continues to render gratitude  workers for their continue efforts and support which have seen the country develop steadily over the years. He added, the theme for this year's celebration "Ghana at 60:mobilizing for Ghana's future through the creation of decent jobs "was aptly chosen and couldn't have waited for any other time.
The regional minister made a passionate appeal to all workers take advantage of planting for food campaign to go into farming so as to supplement their income. He also reiterated government's commitment to expand social amenities throughout the country.

In his concluding remarks, he also appealed to organised Labour to join government's fight against illegal mining which is destroying our vegetation and polluting our water bodies.
